Edward Marks and Joe Stern produced the first music video during 1894 to promote the sale of their single “The little lost child”. Projecting a series of a number of still images whilst performing simultaneously to produce the video. This is still used in certain videos today and had been branded the first music video of all time.
Music videos are important as they have a purpose to advertise a band to the audience. This is effective as a music video is used to promote a band or artist to their audience and allow the audience to follow the music artist in terms of personality, vision, representation and life style. Music videos also allow the audience to listen to their bands and in some videos relate the narrative of the video to their own life.
The music through video had become popular due to the rise of the beetles and musical innovation. This is important as the band are sometimes seen as the founder of modern day music and are generally widely known as the most popular and remembered music band of all time. Music Videos become ultimately popular between the years of 1981 and 1991. This was due to the release of MTV becoming live on mainstream television 24 hours a day. This was very important to the music era as it promoted music artists and their music in a whole new way and increased the revenue from artist within the music business. The first music video played on mainstream TV was presented by the buggles and called “video killed the radio star”.
In the past, directors especially between the years of 1992-2004 had produced music videos. Directors such as David Fincher and Mark Romanek had a big influence within the production of the music video. Music videos such as “scream” from Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson, which had cost Romanek 7 million dollars, and was a huge hit. Today the development of music videos seems to have turn towards the artist and record label as the audience prefer to watch their favourite artists/band performing during their videos. For lower key artists/bands such as JLS they do not have the money to pay a director and therefore leave it to there record label to produce the video.
Technical convergence is important to the rise of the use of music videos due to the increase in popular technologies being formed to present the music videos. Music videos have had an impact on the consumer as during 1981 and 1991, music videos began to broadcast on mainstream television as the TV channel MTV was formed which changed the way the audience could consume the music. From this point onwards the music video had become much more successful and was now aired 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This then changed from 2005 onwards, as music videos were now available to be viewed via the Internet. A milestone into the increase in internet-friendly music videos was the release of the website youtube. This was very effective as it allows the audience to view any uploaded music video and also allows the audience to upload their own videos. This would dramatically raise the popularity of music videos as the audience can now use a number of technologies such as television, computers, mobile and mp3 players such as iPods to view music videos.
